The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With approximately 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Junior Group Translational control and metabolism is seeking for June / July 2018 a

(Ref-No. 075/2018)

The Loayza-Puch laboratory at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg is working in studying the regulation of mRNA translation in cancer. Using ribosome footprinting datasets, we uncover novel metabolic vulnerabilities that can be exploited for cancer therapy (Loayza-Puch F. et al. Nature, 2016).

Cancers develop in very heterogeneous tissue environments. They depend on the tumor microenvironment (TME) for sustained growth, metastasis, and therapy resistance. Stromal cells are genetically stable and they have less likelihood to develop resistance than cancer cells. Therefore, targeting the TME represents an attractive approach for treating cancer. In order to develop new therapeutic strategies to reprogram the TME and inhibit tumor growth and resistance, it is essential to understand in detail the molecular mechanisms of the interactions between cancer and stromal cell populations. Our lab aims to address these challenges in the ERC-funded project "DualRP", which focuses in understanding the metabolic and gene expression complexities of multiple cellular types in the tumor microenvironment.

The Loayza-Puch research group is looking for a highly motivated and ambitious individual who is able to pursue research projects independently. The tasks of the candidate will be centered in studying cell interactions in the tumor microenvironment. Using innovative sequencing approaches, the candidate will be able to explore simultaneously gene expression patterns and metabolic limitations in multiple interacting cell populations in growing tumors and in response to cancer therapy.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her own research project and work on projects that employ a wide range of innovative sequencing technologies.

Your profile:
Applicants should hold a PhD in biology / life sciences with solid experience in cellular and molecular biology as well as cancer biology, or closely related fields. Previous experience in mRNA translation, cancer metabolism, and mouse models of cancer is desirable but not an absolute requirement. The candidate should be a strong team-player with very good work organization skills and reliability. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Applications should include a CV, cover letter, a complete list of publications and 2-3 references.

The position is limited to 2 years with option on further extension.
The position can in principle be part-time.

The German Cancer Research Center is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and encourages female applicants to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
