At the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, one of the 83 institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, physicists, chemists and biologists create knowledge of long-term relevance to life and basic medical sciences. The Department of Biomolecular Mechanisms at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research is seeking talented

Ph.D. Students and PostDocs (f/m)
(Code number 09/2018)

that are interested in applying structural-biological methods, (bio)chemistry, molecular biology and spectroscopic methods/biophysics to the study of intriguing biomolecular questions.

Successful candidates will be making important discoveries in the field of:
• Ladderane lipid biosynthesis in anammox bacteria. Ladderanes are highly unusual hydrocarbon moieties with linearly concatenated cyclobutane rings and high energy compounds that may constitute a possible major fuel in the future.
• Viral capsid assembly and processing mechanisms and active transport of DNA of virophages. Virophages constitute a recently discovered type of dsDNA viruses that thrive at the expense of giant viruses. The department and institute offer a highly interdisciplinary and interacting environment with emphasis on molecular and cellular mechanisms and structures. Further information could also be found on:
Applicants will hold a university degree in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field, possess good English writing and communication skills and have an appropriate productivity record as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed international journals. We expect that the candidates are highly motivated, open-minded, and capable of critical and analytical thinking.

We offer state-of-the-art facilities at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, which is embedded in a rich scientific and cultural environment in the scenic city of Heidelberg, Germany. The positions are available from June 2018 and are supported by the European Research Council and Max Planck Society, with salaries according to TVöD (Bund) (German public salary scale with fringe benefits).

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
