Job Description

New RAT is the next generation cellular communication standard which promises not only to significantly increase the data rate but also to enable ultra-low-latency services and internet-of-things applications. Millimeter wave communications, which utilizes the large amount of spectrum in the mmWave band, is also part of the NR standard. Many measurement campaigns show that the channel in the mmWave band is extremely sparse. Compressed sensing is a powerful tool for exploiting the sparsity in the signal.

The student will start as an intern for the first 3 months to understand the environment and then continue onto the Master thesis project. The topic of the thesis is the compressed sensing based channel estimation technique for providing accurate channel estimates in the mmWave band.


  • Study of literature about the compressed sensing concept
  • Implementation of compressed sensing based channel estimation algorithms
  • Integration of developed algorithm into an already existing link-level simulator framework
  • Investigation of compressed sensing based channel estimation algorithms with respect to performance, advantages / disadvantages and computational complexity


Required Qualifications

  • Master student of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Physics with knowledge in estimation theory and wireless communications
  • Intermediate programming skills in Matlab
  • Very good English language skills (Thesis should be written in English)
  • Willingness to proceed with Master thesis project in the field of 5G baseband algorithm

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in working in C/C++
  • Experience with link level simulators
  • Sound knowledge of estimation theory and linear algebra
  • Hands-on experience with compressed sensing and convex optimization
