GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 75 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry/ GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology within the research division Marine Ecology, is offering a post as

Analytical marine natural product chemist

starting on 1st July 2018.

Job Description:
Analytical chemistry is the backbone of natural product research. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced post-doctoral candidate with demonstrated expertise in modern analytical marine natural product chemistry. The main task of the holder of this post will involve LC-MS/MS-based secondary metabolome mining (particularly by MS/MS fragment similarity based molecular networking) coupled to chemical imaging, i.e. Desorption Electrospray Ionization-Imaging Mass Spectrometry (DESI-IMS) of natural products from marine microbes and macro-organisms. Further experience in dereplication, statistical analyses and downstream chemistry (purification, characterization of metabolites) are required. The main application areas will be chemical ecology and drug discovery.

The successful candidate will participate in various drug discovery and chemical ecology projects on marine invertebrates, marine plants and microorganisms. He/she will closely interact with other research groups from broad range of scientific disciplines at both GEOMAR and Kiel University. He/she will be heavily involved in maintenance of the LC-MS/DESI-IMS equipment, establishment/validation of new analytical methods, training/supervision of postgraduate/undergraduate students and preparations of external funding proposals.

Candidates with strong track records of accomplishment in terrestrial plant, terrestrial microbe related analytical chemistry/secondary metabolome mining are highly encouraged to apply, provided they have sufficient hands-on skills and experience.

The research unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry is equipped with state-of-the-art chemical facilities including UPLC-QTOF-MS-coupled with DESI Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS, accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system, FT-IR, polarimeter and related databases, as well as microbiology/biotechnology facilities and over 50 in vitro biological assays. GEOMAR has full access to high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities at the Chemistry Department of Kiel University. We are members of several excellence clusters, such as The Future Ocean, and several EU research consortia.

Qualifications required:

  • A diploma and a PhD in marine/analytical natural products chemistry or a related field
  • Demonstrated competence and hands-on experience in analytical techniques for molecular networking type metabolomics and dereplication of diverse classes of marine natural products mainly by LC-MS, preferably also by GC-MS, NMR and other techniques
  • Proficiency in various commercial and in house databases, and big data management
  • Complex statistical analyses of the obtained big data
  • Previous experience in imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is highly desirable
  • Previous experience in purification (HPLC) and chemical characterization of diverse types of natural products by high field NMR, HRMS, LC-MS
  • Experience in writing publications, conference papers and research proposals
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, prioritisation of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated project and laboratory management skills in multiple tasks
  • Capability for independent work, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity
  • Previous work with microbial natural products is highly desirable.

The position is available for a funding period of two years, starting 1st July 2018. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position cannot be split, flexible work models are possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
